Alisha's story

Alisha is a rising senior at Acton Boxborough Regional High School. She was first inspired to create Project Beacon while volunteering at the Life Care Center nursing home. At the center, she came in every week after school to aid in caring for seniors. She helped in any way she could, from reading novels out loud to helping them with daily activities. She enjoyed these interactions as they allowed her to connect with people and learn their stories- people she wouldn't have had the chance to meet otherwise. She began to notice how the seniors also thrived during these interactions that allowed them to form connections. Growing up in a town where community means everything, she decided to fill the gap that she noticed between the seniors and their surrounding community. She began to informally host events, like Art Night and Book Club, which inspired her to involve other community members through creating Project Beacon. Project Beacon has now expanded to include many other communities, all of which you can read about through viewing our Projects page!
